The USNA PCCT Welcome Aboard for the Class of 2011 was held on June 10th at the Connecticut State Capitol Building in Hartford, Ct.

Tom Maxwell, Connecticut’s Blue & Gold Officer gave a brief overview of the class of 2011.  For the class of 2011 there were 13 offers for an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, 10 candidates accepted the offer, and 1 candidate was pending acceptance, awaiting results of a medical review.  In addition, 2 NAPS candidates were accepted into the class of 2011 along with 1 Foundation candidate. 

Tom noted that Farmington High School this year sent 4 graduates to U.S. Service Academies:  In addition to Thomas Jones, a member of the USNA class of 2011, Farmington High School sent 2 of its graduating seniors to West Point, and another graduating senior to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. 

Rear Admiral Cecil D. Haney Presentation

Rear Admiral Cecil D. Haney was the guest speaker at the Welcome Aboard presentation and is a 1978 graduate of USNA. He became Commander of Submarine Group 2 stationed in Groton, Ct.  in October 2006, has a master’s degree in Engineering, and graduated from the Naval Post Graduate School.  He has been awarded the defense medal, the Legion of Merit, and several other awards. The admiral gave a personal presentation to each of the 2011 candidates, a Command Challenge Coin from Submarine Group 2, along with the following guidelines:

•“Strive to learn, grow and challenge yourself”
•“USNA is a unique and special experience, a transformation that is incredible”
•"Take your oath seriously, it truly means something”
•"Don’t loose your sense of humor”
•“Work intelligently, whether in academics, militarily, etc.”
•“Wish all God Speed & Success in the opportunities that lay ahead”

Admiral Haney’s final words to all of the candidates, as well as to the mids and newly appointed ensigns from the USNA class of the 2007 were “Thanks for Serving”.
